Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read  in our country. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community –- librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types –- in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.

First observed in 1982, Banned Books Week reminds Americans not to take the freedom to read for granted. Since 1990, the American Library Association’s (ALA) Office for Intellectual Freedom has received reports of 9,500 attempts to remove books deemed by some as inappropriate.

During this year’s Banned Books Week, the Vail Public Library will be showing films based on books that have been banned or challenged in the past.

·         Monday September 22 at 3:30 pm – Bridge to Terabithia

·         Tuesday September 23 at 3:30 pm – Matilda

·         Wednesday September 24 at 3:30 pm – To Kill a Mockingbird

·         Thursday September 25 at 3:30 pm – The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
