"If the book we are reading does not wake us, as with a fist hammering on our skulls, then why do we read it? Good God, we also would be happy if we had no books and such books that make us happy we could, if need be, write ourselves. What we must have are those books that come on us like ill fortune, like the death of one we love better than ourselves, like suicide. A book must be an ice axe to break the sea frozen inside us."

—Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Austrian writer, The Metamorphosis, The Trial

Tuesdays, September 30 - November 18 from 4:30 - 5:30 pm.

Reading Buddies is a program offered at  Vail Public Library with the support of  The Literacy Project of Eagle County. In Reading Buddies, we match volunteer middle and high school students with children in grades 1-3 for a 1 hour reading time once per week. The Reading Buddies Program meets at the Vail Public Library for an 8 week session during the school year and a 6 week session in the summer.  The 1 hour program includes a group activity, one on one reading, reflection time, and games. The purpose of Reading Buddies is to provide a leadership, responsibility, and community service opportunity by facilitating middle and high school mentors to help foster a love of reading in elementary school students.

Contact Cricket Pylman for an application to be either a Big Buddy or a Little Buddy! Application deadline is September 19th  for Big Buddies and for Little Buddies.

Big buddies need to interview and be trained the week of September 22nd.
